Workers Health and Safety Centre (WHSC) course—“Patient Handling” will be offered in Mississauga Nov 2004.
Studies show that the main cause of musculoskeletal injuries suffered by health care workers is patient handling.
This Workers Health and Safety Centre (WHSC) 4-day course provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply ergonomic principles while identifying, assessing and controlling patient handling hazards. Participants will assess workplace lifting needs, discuss how to develop a lifting program, and
experience hands-on use of lifting equipment. The course will be held at a health care facility in Mississauga, November 8-11, 2004. For registration information, click here.
Who should attend?
Joint health and safety committee members and health and safety representatives, workers, and employers in the health care sector, all benefit from learning how to prevent musculoskeletal injuries caused by patient handling.
Since part of the mandate of a local health and safety structure involves preventing injuries, worker health and safety representatives should approach their employers and ask them to send workers and committee members to the course. It is essential that joint health and safety committees understand how to identify,
assess and control hazards to carry out their functions in the workplace.
The Occupational Health and Safety Act obligates employers to inform workers about the hazards in their work, adopt work practices, and implement precautions that minimize those hazards, and train workers to perform their work safely. Joint health and safety committees and health and safety representatives can also ask
employers to contact the WHSC to deliver the program in their workplaces.
