URGENT ACTION
SCARBOROUGH / DURHAM HOSPITAL STAFF
The Central East LHIN is making changes that
could take away your job
June 13, 2008
The Central East Local Health
Integration Network (LHIN) is making major changes to the
region's health services first, then planning afterwards. The
results are one bad decision after another that may
soon affect your job. First the LHIN decided to cut Durham
Region's acute care mental health beds in half in March, putting
additional pressure on all hospitals in the region. Then it
approved major bed cuts at Centenary hospital, including surgery
beds and cardiac care beds. Now it is about to unveil a plan to
force every hospital in the Central East LHIN -- including
Whitby Mental Health, Rouge Valley and Lakeridge -- to contract
out one per cent of their operating budget to a community-based
agency.
There is a broad base of community groups and
unions responding to this challenge. Please attend one or more
of the following URGENT events.
Monday, June 16 / 5:30 pm
Picket of the LHIN Symposium at UOIT/Durham
College
Meet at the main entrance of UOIT / Durham
College for a 45-minute picket beginning at 5:30 pm.
Wednesday, June 18 / 10:00 a.m.
The coalition is presenting at Durham Regional
Council, urging the Council to withhold capital funding for
Rouge Valley until services are restored.
Support in the gallery would make a statement.
Monday, June 23 / 11:30 am to 1 pm
Picket and BBQ at Rouge Valley Centenary
Hospital. Rouge Valley intends to close more than 60 beds at
two sites and cut about 220 jobs.
Don't wait until it's your turn to receive a
layoff notice. We need to act now. Please share this e-mail
with friends, family and others who may wish to support us.
