OPSEU hospital professionals at May 1 Medicare Event

United for National Public Medicare,  a coalition of health care workers from CUPE, ONA, OPSEU and SEIU Canada, held very successful information pickets in downtown Toronto on May 1 to bring attention to the Ontario Health Coalition's Yes! National Public Medicare campaign.

The day began with a leafleting campaign outside of Union Station.   After handing out more than 9,000 campaign tabloids to commuters in less than 90 minutes, the group headed north to the site of the former King's Health Centre, one of Ontario's first private for-profit health care centres, to lay a wreath, declaring "private health care, rest in peace!"

In the early afternoon, information pickets continued at several hospitals in the downtown core, including Princess Margaret, Mount Sinai and the Toronto General Hospital site.  Several hundred members of CUPE, ONA, OPSEU, SEIU and supporters turned out!

In all, close to 500 signatures were gathered for the petition to be forwarded to the Romanow Commission.   Media attended the events, including CFMT and Toronto's CP24.  Congratulations to all  for a fantastic day!
