Politics and your health care profession July 8, 2004 The Honourable George Smitherman, MPP Dear Minister: OPSEU represents about 13,000 allied professionals who work in public hospitals across Ontario. These professionals feel very strongly that the Ministry of Health may understand the needs of nurses and doctors, but does not understand the concerns of other health professionals. Our members, too, are an essential part of the team. I would like to invite you to walk a mile in the shoes of an allied hospital professional. I would like to tour some hospitals with you and introduce you to some of our members in their workplaces. These would include laboratory and x-ray technologists, blood bank and ECG technicians, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and hundreds more professions. I invite you to learn about their concerns. I would like to give these members a chance to share with you some of their horror stories about staff shortages, and how these shortages are putting patient care at risk, every day, in our hospitals. I hope you will reply positively to this proposal. If so, my staff can make the necessary arrangements with your office. Sincerely, (signed) Leah Casselman, President Politics and Your Health Care Profession Index
