OPSEU members rally in Bracebridge to support fired steward

June 25, 2007

BRACEBRIDGE:  About 40-50 OPSEU members and supporters attended a rally today in Bracebridge backing a union steward, Kelly Henry, fired earlier this spring for speaking out publicly against cuts to lab services at Muskoka Algonquin Health Care.

Region 3 Board Members report a great show of support and solidarity as shouts of 'Justice for Kelly' and 'For people not profit' rang out loud and clear in Bracebridge. Supporters included representatives of the local labour council, teachers’ unions, and CUPE

EBM Claire Rowett spoke with members of Kelly's family who questioned how someone could be fired for simply standing up for their principles. “They said ‘if she doesn't get hired back this is not my Canada.’ I think we all agree it certainly wouldn't be a democratic Ontario.”
