OPSEU hospital professionals march on Caplan constituency office

November 21, 2008

TORONTO -- More than 100 members of the OPSEU Hospital Professionals Division marched to Health Minister David Caplan’s constituency office November 21 to ask for a halt to the present round of hospital cuts.

The group presented Caplan’s office with a letter signed by members of the HPD who are gathered at the North York Radisson for their demand set.

OPSEU President Smokey Thomas, 1st Vice-President Patty Rout and HPD Chair Yves Shank met briefly with Caplan’s constituency assistant.

“Caplan addressed the nurses convention yesterday, but once again refuses to acknowledge your role,” OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas told the group. “Hospitals cannot function without you.”

The letter says hospital restraint is compounding professional shortages in counter to the province’s efforts to reduce wait times and manage health human resources through Healthforce Ontario.

The Hospital Professionals Division is meeting Nov 21-22 to elect a bargaining team and set demands for the upcoming bargaining in the new year.
