June 21, 2004 Hon. George Smitherman Dear Minister: On June 16, OPSEU members heard a shocking public allegation about misuse of public funds at Windsor Regional Hospital. At a public meeting, Dr. Sion said cancer surgery was often rescheduled because of private cosmetic surgery done in the operating rooms in WRH’s Metropolitan Campus. Consumers and staff attending this meeting were outraged. The doctor said the hospital was charging plastic surgeons just $156 per hour. He said this fee covers the use of hospital facilities Monday to Friday daytime hours, 100 days per year. It also covers the use of all hospital staff necessary to perform these procedures for which these plastic surgeons are paid in the thousands. I am told Windsor Regional is losing surgeons because of lack of OR time. Minister, I ask that your Ministry look very closely at this matter to determine if cancer patients have to stand in line behind those receiving facelifts and tummy-tucks. Are public funds being used to fuel profits for plastic surgeons? Meantime, our allied health professionals bargaining unit has recently received notice of the layoff of 20 professionals. The hand injuries program has been decimated. WRH told our members this was due to a shortfall of $2 million. How much of this supposed shortfall is a result of the nearly free gift WRH is giving to Windsor’s plastic surgeons? Sincerely, (signed) Leah Casselman,
