Local 368 NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE  February 26, 2007

Mental health and addiction services in Durham Region at risk says OPSEU

OSHAWA – Services for addictions, crisis intervention and child and adolescent mental health in this community could be put at risk because of hospital funding cuts.

About 59 addiction councillors, serving individuals at risk for mental health and addiction issues, are among about 75 jobs that could be lost at Lakeridge Health.

The cuts to the Pinewood mental health facility, part of Lakeridge, were announced last week.

Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) said the announcement shows that decisions made at the provincial level are forcing the hand of local health authorities.

Lisa Madden, vice-president of Local 348, said this decision would hurt children and adolescents at risk, and adult outpatients. “Mental health and addictions are a serious family and community issue, so why isn’t the government supporting these programs? The full consequences of these cuts on our communities will be measured in years, because the lack of supports today for vulnerable people comes with a high price tag in future.”

“We were told with the Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) that decision-making would be in local hands. But when funding is cut, decisions are dictated by the ministry,” she said. “Ontario can do better for families seeking treatment for their loved ones who are at risk.”

Pinewood consists of mental health facilities in Oshawa, Ajax, Port Perry and Bowmanville. The union says it will work with the community to fight the cuts and find solutions to this crisis.
