End to mandatory flu shots a victory for ambulance paramedics OPSEU ambulance paramedics have welcomed the government’s decision to back down on mandatory flu shots. “It’s a victory for all paramedics,” said the chair of the union’s ambulance division, Jamie Ramage. Since the flu shots were made mandatory in 2000, paramedics in many services refused to get the shots because they didn’t want to risk potential side effects from the annual immunization program. The combination of grass roots actions against the shots and a pending legal challenge combined to pressure the government to make the flu vaccinations voluntary. “A lot of work has gone into this,” said Ramage. “I’d like to thank all the ambulance paramedics who put their jobs on the line to win it, and to the many other health professionals who backed us.” He urged paramedics to get all the information they need about the flu shots and to make their own informed decisions as to whether the shots are right for them or not.
