GREY-BRUCE LABOUR COUNCIL, Representing the needs of working people since 1956. Date: October 30th, 2003 Dear OPSEU Brothers and Sisters; At the recent Grey-Bruce Labour Council meeting held on October 27th, 2003 all union delegates unanimously endorsed and passed the motion to support your fight against the firemedic model being irresponsibly pushed by the current Owen Sound municipal government The City of Owen Sound has been moving ahead on an experimental plan to merge the jobs of firefighters and paramedics. They have done this without consultation with you, the citizens and taxpayers of this city. The cost of this experiment has been upwards of $100,000. The City did not attend a public forum held Oct. 21 to explain its actions. More than 100 citizens did, including several council candidates. This in the Labour Council’s opinion is ample proof that the experiment will not stand up to public scrutiny. The best check and balance in any democratic society is the electoral process, and hopefully those supporting the experiment will fail in their bid for election / re-election. Paramedics and firefighters are two distinct professions, with two distinct approaches to their work. The two functions should remain distinct. The electorate should support candidates for municipal government in Owen Sound that support the existing model for Emergency Services in Owen Sound not the firemedic model. Dave Trumble
