OPSEU and the community stand firm against cuts to Ajax hospital
April 11, 2008
OPSEU held a news conference April 10 and notified the media
about an injunction to stop the cuts.
In the evening, about 1,000 people came out to a public
meeting at the Ajax Community Centre to oppose the transfer of 20 mental
health inpatient beds out of the local hospital.

Bill Parrish of the Friends of the
Ajax-Pickering Hospital (pictured at the microphone), told the Central
East LHIN that "the legislation requires, not suggests, but requires you
consult the public beforehand -- and you haven't done it." OPSEU
President Warren Smokey Thomas had earlier pledged OPSEU's support for
the community's fight during the meeting.

consulted on the planned transfer of mental health beds from Ajax to
Scarborough, despite earlier commitments to improve access to mental
health services in the community.
