May 30, 2006 Community Living Mississauga contract ratified

Over 200 members of local 251 came out to vote yesterday on a tentative deal reach early Saturday morning. 91 percent voted in favour of the offer that includes a two year contract with a pay increase of 2.77% first year, not including pay equity, and a wage re-opener in the second year dependant on government funding.

The deal also includes a part-time scheduling protocol and lay-off recall procedure, both of which did not exist prior to this contract.  It also sets up a joint benefits committee to examine alternative options to improve members’ benefit package.

Members of local 251 have been on strike for seven weeks. The employer has promised back to work notices will be sent out today.

May 29, 2006 A tentative deal has been reached in the Community Living Mississauga strike

This is the first strike in CLM’s 26-year history of being unionized.

In the past the workers have put their clients first and avoided going on strike because they know how much the people they care for need them. But now, wages are so low and working conditions so difficult they've been left with no choice.

Fairness for part-timers and a reasonable wage increase are the main issues in the dispute, two-thirds of the 360 employees are part-timers, earning less than $15 an hour with no benefits.
