Geneva Centre strike deadline set for Oct 29
October 7, 2010
OPSEU Local 548 at the Geneva Centre for Autism is one step
closer to a strike as conciliation on October 7, 2010 ended with the union
filing a "no board."
A key issue at the bargaining table is a proposal to lay off all
staff for five days over the end of year holidays. The employer continues to
insist that temporary layoffs will be in the contract.
"Know that we stand strong," said OPSEU President, Warren
(Smokey) Thomas. "Geneva Centre workers have the full support of their union.
OPSEU will do everything in its power to ensure that you get the fair contract
you deserve."
A 98% strike vote sent a strong message to the employer. The
Geneva Centre threatened to conduct a temporary layoff of the entire bargaining
unit of 80 members, a tactic that they have already used once before and assert
that they will continue to use.
An information picket on October 4 demonstrated overwhelming
support for the workers by parents who receive autism services for their
children.
The conciliator will file a "no board" on Oct. 12. The strike
deadline is set for Oct. 29 at 12:01 a.m.
Geneva Centre employees provide direct service and community
support to people with autism and their families.
