BARGAINING UPDATES

October 8, 2004

Local 214

Bargaining Bulletin #2

As promised this is the second bulletin to keep you updated concerning your Collective Agreement Bargaining.

We met with the Employer at a neutral location, Sept. 20 and 21st 2004, to exchange proposals and begin Bargaining. The proposals exchanged between the parties were non-economic and also dealt with updating the language in your Collective Agreement to reflect today’s reality of the new agency.

The mood and the tone at the table was professional and cordial, with our Chair, Judy Robertson, setting the tone with the following opening remarks on behalf of the Union Team :

From the formation of the new agency management has communicated a desire for the agency to be known for its excellence. In support of this stated object, we concur with management on keeping the discussions positive in order to provide a sound workable agreement.

Exceptional agencies understand the value of true partnership between union and management--a partnership in which differences are recognized and respected, and common ground is the focus of our work together. A true union-management partnership benefits both the agency and the union, as all employees work together to enhance organizational effectiveness, union strength and the quality of work life for all employees.

It is our hope during this time of bargaining, we are able to build a sound working document that reflects a partnership in the daily practice of respect for all employees. When the agency and the union can work harmoniously, then both are able to support the well-being of all employees.

MOVING AHEAD

On the first two days at the table there was much progress with numerous proposals being agreed to. The professional and cordial mood and tone were carried forward to the second meeting Oct. 6 2004. Progress continued to be made and a presentation was made by a representative from the OPSEU Joint Trusteed Benefit Fund.

Looking forward, there are seven days of Bargaining booked in October and November. We will continue to negotiate your non-economic Demands and once that task is complete, we will then move on to the economic Demands. We believe it will be possible to move onto the economic Demands during the month of November.

The quality of the Collective Agreement we negotiate at the table is directly proportional to the level of support you show for the Bargaining Team in the workplace.

Show your support by wearing your OPSEU pin or use your OPSEU pen on the days theTeam is at the table.

On behalf of the Team, we thank the members for their support.

IT’S ALL ABOUT RESPECT!!!!!

In Solidarity,

J.Judy Robertson Chair
Anne-Marie Champagnie Vice Chair
