Kennedy House, Local 361, on strike
The Premier
refuses to speak to strikers
Who’s more important to
Dalton McGuinty? A youth correctional worker who’s been on strike for 22
weeks or a Liberal party donor driving a luxury Lexus worth twice what
the strikers earn in a year?
If you guessed the Lexus
driver, you’d be right.
McGuinty’s Yukon SUV breezed
by Kennedy House strikers without stopping as the Premier was whisked
into a Liberal fundraiser Aug. 21 at a ritzy golf course outside
Toronto. The strikers had been told before hand by a member of the
Premier’s security detail that they might get five minutes with McGuinty.
As one striker said of the
Premier's snub, “We’ll remember that when the provincial election rolls
around next year.”
Strikers handed out pocket
cards about the strike to cars entering and leaving the golf course,
including those chauffeuring senior cabinet ministers.
One minister said: “Mary
Anne’s got the point. I’m sure she’ll do something about it.” He was
referring to Mary Anne Chambers, Minister of Children and Youth
Services. Her ministry 100 per cent funds Kennedy House.
Needless to say, after
waiting nearly five months for the government to take action, the
strikers aren’t holding their breath. Look for us, Mary Anne and Dalton,
at your next photo op.
