Elizabeth Fry Toronto workers show overwhelming support for
bargaining team

OPSEU Local 518 at Elizabeth Fry Toronto have voted
91.3% in favour of taking strike action should that become necessary.
After just four days of bargaining in August 2011, the employer walked
away from the table. After prolonged delays, the parties finally met at
conciliation on June 21 and 22, 2012. At conciliation, the employer
refused to meet with the union bargaining team face-to-face and offered
only a 1% wage increase in the fourth year of a four year deal.
Executive Director Michelle Coombs is also asking for an erosion of
rights for casual and contract workers at EFry Toronto.
"Elizabeth Fry Toronto workers are asking for respect and a fair deal,"
said OPSEU President, Warren (Smokey) Thomas. "They have the full
support of their union as they face this difficult employer."
Jaime McGuire, Unit Steward for Local 518 is proud of the results they
received in a strike vote on Thursday, June 28. "Elizabeth Fry Toronto
is a social service agency committed to justice. We had hoped for
respect from our employer. We deserve better."
"Our members have given a strong show of support to their bargaining
team. We will do what it takes to get a decent contract," said McGuire.
The Local 518 bargaining team – Jaime McGuire, Hildah Namu and Lorraine
McKellar – give thanks to all of the members for the strong mandate they
have received.
Workers at EFry Toronto provide transitional residence and community
support for women who are, have been or are at risk of being in conflict
with law.
