2011 Broader Public Service (BPS) Conference and Sector/Divisional Meetings

April 15, 2011

I  invite you to attend the 2011 Broader Public Service (BPS) Conference and Sector/Divisional meeting. The conference will be held at the Sheraton Hotel, located at 123 Queen St. West, Toronto, from Friday, June 17 to Sunday, June 19, 2011. Sector/Divisional meetings will start after the conference events on Friday, beginning on Saturday June 18 to Sunday June 19, 2011, at the hotel.

This year marks the 19th anniversary of the official recognition of the Broader Public Sector as an integral and distinct division in OPSEU. In keeping with our theme of Developing, Networking and Advocating in our communities (DNA), this year’s conference prepares us for the upcoming Provincial Election. The core message is one of encouragement to all of our BPS Sectors that we are all in this together and that we can collectively work together to effect change in our locals and our communities by participating in our electoral process. I hope you will take the opportunity to join us and meet with other members in your Sector and other participants at the conference. It is a great time to learn new skills and you will leave the conference with a feeling of solidarity with the rest of the BPS. You will identify goals and objectives around workplace issues and develop new expertise in dealing with those issues.

The delegate entitlement rules are explained in the attached call documents – please read them carefully. Delegate entitlement will be the same for both the BPS Conference and the Sector Divisional meetings. There will not be a separate call sent out for the Sector Divisional meetings.

For all members who will be attending the conference and travelling by air, you are directed to use Vision 2000 in order to be reimbursed for your air travel expenses. By booking through Vision 2000 it allows OPSEU the opportunity to get the best rates for our members when travelling on union business by optimizing our volume.

The Sector Division meetings are an important part of this weekend. At the meetings you will determine the short and long-term goals of your Sector/Division and elect the leadership who will lead you in implementing them.

I encourage you and your members to honour your delegate entitlement and attend this year’s conference.

In Solidarity,

Warren (Smokey) Thomas
President

Conference Call

OPSEU’s Broader Public Service Conference is a gathering of members from across the province who belong to bargaining units in OPSEU’s largest sector. You are front-line and support staff in community agencies, universities, casino workers, hospital and community health professionals and support workers, youth workers, education workers, social services professionals and support staff, and Paramedics, to name a few. You are 70,000 members strong and part of more than 100,000 working families belonging to OPSEU.

On Friday morning, June 17th, all delegates to the conference will gather to participate in a plenary session. We have invited Marc Zwelling to lead the plenary in developing questions that will draw out desired information and party platforms at All Candidates Meetings held in our communities during an election. Friday afternoon will be a Town Hall meeting where delegates will have an opportunity to ask the Leaders (or their designate) of each Political Party questions developed in the morning workshop.

The Health Care Divisional Council and the Community Services Divisional Council will be meeting on Saturday morning. Sectors not involved in those meetings will attend a workshop selected by their Divisional Executive in conjunction with OPSEU Education and Campaigns department. On Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday, sectors will conduct their Divisional/Sector meetings. These meetings are scheduled to do the business of the Sector and elect new Sector Division Executive Committees. Members who are in bargaining units not associated with a structured sector will attend another workshop.

Please check the schedule to confirm if your Sector/Division is holding a meeting.

Who should attend?

If you are an OPSEU Local Executive Committee member, bargaining team member, steward, or have been asked to represent your bargaining unit on behalf of your elected leadership, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to network, learn, share experiences and have some fun.

(Please see the enclosed delegate entitlement guidelines for more details on how many can attend from your unit.)
