CAS workers fundraise for vulnerable children in the face of a provincial funding crisis

June 3, 2010

Child protection workers across the province set to “fundraise” for vulnerable children on Monday June 7.  Workers will lobby their MPP’s demanding that the child protection formula be changed to include the cost of amendments made in the Child and Family Services Act in 2006. Members across the province have been facing job cuts, program cuts and unmanageable workloads, especially in communities hardest hit by the recession. In May, the Ministry informed agencies that previous mitigation funds would now be rolled into 2010 allocations. This stop gap measures only confirms the dire state of funding for these crucial services.  The Ministry must recognize that the policy vision for child welfare services has not been supported by the funding model. Agencies that were facing bankruptcy will be in the same position in early fall without sustainable increases to base funding. 11 CASs are currently in court challenging the government’s funding formula.

Today, OPSEU members join CUPE and CEP members in a meeting with the Commission for Sustainability in Child Welfare. OPSEU CAS workers will recommend a provincial workload review and urgent changes to the CAS funding formula.
