The staff of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario walked off the job Monday, Nov. 1, in an effort to achieve a fair first contract.

This leaves Ontario's bars, casinos, bingo halls and charity gambling operations unregulated.

The 200 members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union who work for AGCO are the ones who enforce the laws around gambling and licences premises in the province.

OPSEU President Leah Casselman said the AGCO's approach to negotiating a contract with its staff showed complete disdain for the people who do this important work.

"All we want is a contract that treats our members with respect. They have a right to know what their pay rates will be. They have a right to know what their benefits will cover. No employer should be able to change those things at whim," Casselman said.
