"Short-term" layoffs:
CAN YOU LIVE ON SCRAPS?

The AGCO has demanded the right to lay you off for up to 90 days at a time.

Under their "short-term" layoff proposal, tabled in contract talks with your OPSEU bargaining team, regular job security language would not apply.

You would not get termination pay. Seniority would mean nothing.

Under the Employment Standards Act (ESA) – the bare-bones law that covers workers without a union – the AGCO would not have to give notice if the layoff is temporary. They wouldn’t even have to say why they were laying you off!

Under the ESA, the only thing the AGCO would have to give you is the date they want you to back.

You might be laid off for 90 days, come back to work, and get another short-term layoff. In some workplaces, managers have used short-term layoffs to intimidate employees they simply didn’t like. Maybe you’d just be sent home for a few weeks to balance your manager’s budget at the end of the year.

How long could you afford to work under those conditions?

And here’s another question: if the AGCO does not plan to use short-term layoffs, why do they want the option?

Stop the takeaways....
