83 per cent say the offer stinks

We’ve tallied the strike votes from across the province, and 83 per cent of you have directed us to reject the OPAC offer and get back to serious bargaining.

There was an 85 per cent voter turnout – which means the result is an accurate reflection of how you feel.

You have armed us with a strike vote. This will force OPAC to understand that we truly do have the backing of our members when we say we cannot accept their offer.

We appreciate your vote of confidence and support. We know that nobody in OPAC wants a strike. But you have made it clear that if you have to take action, you will.

Let the real bargaining begin

As we explained earlier, conciliation and a strike vote traditionally produce more bargaining.

We will resume talks with OPAC, with the assistance of a mediator, on April 27.

The mediator has asked the teams to be available right through until Sunday, April 30.

Now that you have given us a strike mandate, we will be in a position to engage in serious bargaining, leading toward a strike deadline.

We’re there, and we’re ready.

Keep the heat on OPAC

• Sign up for picket duty.
• Set up a phone tree for
your office.
• Sign up for union-sponsored
benefits, which will kick in should we be forced to strike. OPSEU will pay for $25,000 life insurance; $25,000 accidental death or dismemberment; and an extended health plan similar to the OPS (but no dental, vision, hearing, or out-of-country coverage).

Everyone performing strike duty qualifies – both full-time and contract.

Button up!

There will be a new button coming your way next week. It’s got a simple message:

I don’t want to strike – but I will if I have to!

Please wear the buttons on April 26. It’s a good way to let our local managers know we are serious, and it’s all part of the process of keeping the heat on OPAC to bargain a fair contract.

Button up for wage increases for all, meaningful seniority, rights for contract staff, defined hours of work and job security.

Button up to support your team!

The more pressure we can bring to bear against OPAC in the next 10 days, the better our contract will be. Get in touch with your local contact to see how you can be involved.
