The first step in pension reform
Bill 236 is a cautious first phase of amendments to the
Pension Benefits Act. Second reading of the bill should occur in February
2010 but is unscheduled as yet. Another bill is planned for 2010 and Premier
McGuinty has also called for a national pension summit in 2010 to encourage
a pan-Canadian discussion on retirement income; this call has been endorsed
by all other Premiers. Bill 236

"A Fine Balance: Safe Pensions, Affordable Plans, Fair Rules"
November 21, 2008 The Ontario government has released the
final report of the Ontario Expert Commission on Pensions, after two years of
consultations with stakeholders in the pension community, including OPSEU. This
report was prepared by Professor Harry Arthurs and an expert panel including
Murray Gold of Koskie Minsky and Bob Baldwin of the Canadian Labour Congress.
OPSEU is reviewing the report, titled "A Fine Balance: Safe Pensions, Affordable
Plans, Fair Rules" and will make written submissions to the government in the
new year.

The OPSEU
Joint Trusteed Benefit Fund was launched on July 1st, 1996. Employers who have an
OPSEU collective agreement will now be able to obtain all their
group life and health insurance from the Trust Fund, not only for
