Court Reporters GSB Update
November 17, 2009 The parties returned to the GSB
on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 in front of Vice-Chair Abramsky to
continue our discussions regarding court reporting. The employer
continues to delay the proceedings by addressing preliminary matters.
OPSEU is eager to discuss the merits of the case and looks forward to
having that opportunity.

The integrity of the record is at risk.
The Ministry of the Attorney General wants to make big
changes to how court transcripts are produced. It disclosed a new model for
court reporting to the union on Oct. 17, 2008. The model includes the
following changes:
Court reporters believe these changes do not serve the
administration of justice in Ontario. They believe the accuracy, quality and
integrity of the record will be seriously compromised.

November 10, 2008 More than two years after Vice-chair Randi Abramsky
of the Grievance Settlement Board handed down her decision that “the
preparation and certification of transcripts was bargaining unit work of the
court reporters,” the employer finally disclosed its planned model to the
union’s court reporting team on Oct. 17, 2008.
