Bargaining
OPS Bargaining - Opening Positions
November 12, 2008 After a long week of bargaining,
the Corrections Team has finally received a formal opening offer from the
employer.
We extend our thanks to all the members who stood strong
with actions across the province, especially those who stepped down from
acting positions in support of the team. It only proves once again how the
strength of our Division can have a large impact at the bargaining table.
We encourage members to continue to support the team, and
again ask that all members who have not already done so step down from
acting positions as soon as possible.
We are now able to post the formal opening positions for
both the union and the employer.
You can download the positions below.

November
5, 2008 The
Corrections Bargaining Team met with the employer on November 4, 2008 to
begin talks toward a new Collective Agreement.
After
exchanging proposals, it is appears that the Ontario government does not
respect the members of the Corrections bargaining category. The government
have consistently stated they are “The Employer of Choice,” yet their
actions show that they have a long way to go to achieve that title.
The
Corrections Team has told the employer they want to discuss the improvements
to the collective agreement which include:
-
Wages
-
Pensions
-
Premium
pay
-
Vacancy
management
The
employer’s proposals include language that will:
-
Reduce
the ability to work overtime
-
Reduce
current shift premiums
-
Significantly alter current sick leave plans
Prior to
exchanging positions, the employer requested that the team not share the
takeaways they were proposing with the members due to the volatility of the
document. Since the team is committed to being transparent to the members,
they refused the employer’s request. As a result, the employer failed to
outline in detail their entire proposal. Therefore, we are not posting
either the union or employer proposal at this time.
We can expect
that these takeaways will have a drastic effect on the working conditions
and rights of our members.
The
Corrections Bargaining Team is outraged at the employer’s proposals and will
continue to pursue the demands as submitted by the members. The Corrections
Team is confident in the members’ ability to support them during the days
ahead.
