Blood Services Support Unit votes 67 per cent to accept new contract

Ontario Support Unit workers with Canadian Blood Services voted 67 per cent in favour of ratifying their new collective agreement yesterday.

The agreement gives the 850 workers a three per cent increase for each of the three years of the contract plus improved benefits and better job security provisions. Several classifications will receive additional wage adjustments on top of the three per cent.

All four OPSEU Support Unit locals ratified the agreement reached a week before a strike deadline of July 25.

“These workers deserve considerable credit for moving Canadian Blood Services towards a deal,” says Leah Casselman, President of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union. “They stuck to their agenda and have, as a result, made considerable progress in this round of bargaining.”

OPSEU has two other groups still at the table with Canadian Blood Services. The 110 member technologists unit is looking for a deal when it next meets with the employer August 8-9. The Thunder Bay Plasma Unit is also at the bargaining table.
