Child treatment workers vote to strike

April 14, 2009

Members of Local 441 in Brockville have voted overwhelmingly to give their bargaining team the authority to take job action, including a walkout, in their contract negotiations with the Child and Youth Wellness Centre.

Talks broke down when the employer walked away from the bargaining table on Mar. 31. The employer indicated it would file for conciliation, but so far the union has not received notification that a conciliator would join the talks.

“The employer wants to weaken layoff language in our collective agreement and we’re not prepared to accept any take aways,” said Mike Quinn, chair of the bargaining team.

“Our members have told us their priority is improvements to the collective agreement and that their attacks on our layoff language must stop.
